Matthew 13:1-23

After Jesus told the story in Matthew 13:1-8 His disciples asked, “why do you speak to the people in parables?’ Jesus responded in verses 11 and 13. In verse 11 he stated, “Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given” and in verse 13 he stated, “Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.” Because of opposition from Jewish leaders,    Jesus was forced to teach in parables. The word “parable” is a transliteration of a Greek word PARABLOE (para-bow-lay), which means “to place beside.” A parable places something unfamiliar beside something familiar for the purpose of teaching. It uses something you know to help you understand something you don’t know. A parable uses familiar scenes and objects to explain spiritual truths. It reveals spiritual truths to those who want to know and conceals them from those who do not. A parable has been defined as “an earthly story with a heavenly meaning.”

This particular parable is often referred to as “The Parable of the Sower” or “The Parable of the Four Soils,” Jesus explains in verses 18-23 that the “sower” represents God, the “seed” His word, and the “soils” your heart and mine. Which of the four soils reveals the secrets of your heart?

The Closed Heart (13:3-4&19)

The person with a closed heart has a closed mind and decides in advance how he or she is going to respond to what is heard. This person shuts his or her mind and heart to anything that demands a commitment to change.

The Careless Heart (13:5-6 & 20-21)

The person with the careless heart makes

superficial decisions. They react impulsively and emotionally but never let the Word of God take root in their lives. Their commitment to Christ last only a short time.

The Crowded Heart (13:7 & 22)

The seed that fell among thorns, or briars, represents the heart that is full of rival crops. If you really want to hear God and understand His Word, you will have to eliminate the things that crowd out God’s Word. Jesus says there are two things that crowd God’s Word out of our lives.

First is “the worries of this life” (Matt. 13:22). Worries are the problems and pressures that we try to handle without God.

Second is “the deceitfulness of wealth (Matt. 13:22). Wealth is “deceitful,” and as a result many people are so busy making a living they don’t have time for Christ in their lives.

The Cultivated Heart (13:8 & 23)

Jesus described this heart in verse 23 as the heart that doesn’t choke the word with competing desires. It lets God’s Word take deep roots. It is a cultivated heart that has removed the weeds. This heart produces spiritual fruit.

The most important question is:

Which of these represents YOUR heart?
